Are a captive or independent agent?

Are you a captive or independent agent. What advice would you give someone
new in the business trying to decide which one to start their career in and why?

I am a fan of independent agencies especially for newbies. It allows you to experience the business from the point of view of different companies and gives you flexibility with customers.

As a former independent that moved to a captive, I must say that they both have there ups and downs. Starting out in the independent proves better on an educational point of view. However, being a captive agent shows the strengths you have learned and continue to learn. If I could do both, I would :-)

Insqueen, somehow, Nationwide Insurance have been known to allow agents to independent agents to represent them and other customers. I have worked for both of them and they have pros and cons. Thanks for your post!

If brand new to the business, go the captive route. At some point you may want to transition to independent. I was captive 7+ years and now independent for one and a half years. This is definitely more fun and more financially rewarding. But I paid my dues first. My goal is to find everyone the best low cost auto insurance possible.
